What to Expect When You Come Back to the Dentist

No Judgment at Comfort Dental

If it’s been a while since you’ve seen a dentist, you’re not alone. Life gets in the way. Work gets busy. Kids arrive. Money gets tight. And somewhere in the shuffle, dental appointments stop happening. For a lot of people in Montrose, the longer the gap grows, the harder it becomes to make that call.

But there’s something Dr. Alex Kaiser of Comfort Dental wants you to know before you pick up the phone: “There’s not gonna be any judgment there of you as a person. We know that people have struggles.” That’s not just a polished line. It’s something Dr. Kaiser actually thinks about.

A No-Shame Zone

When patients finally come back after a long absence, they often brace for a lecture. They expect to be made to feel bad about the state of their teeth, about the years they missed, about the fact that they didn’t floss. Dr. Kaiser understands why people expect that, and he’s determined to make sure it doesn’t happen at Comfort Dental.

“If you haven’t been in in a while and you’re nervous about, ‘Oh, well, they’re gonna look at me and they’re gonna put me down and they’re gonna chastise me and tell me I need to do this and this and this’… there’s not gonna be any judgment there of you as a person,” he said.

He’s also quick to point out that the dental team is human, too. They have families. They know what it’s like when things pile up. Dr. Kaiser specifically mentioned new mothers as a group that often carries guilt about their dental health: they were pregnant, which is hard on the body and the mouth, and then they had a newborn and stopped sleeping. Of course things fell through the cracks. That context matters.

Honesty Without Harshness

Being non-judgmental doesn’t mean being dishonest. Dr. Kaiser is candid about that. He’ll tell you what he sees, and if changes need to be made, he’ll say so. But there’s a difference between honesty delivered with contempt and honesty delivered with genuine care.

“Everything that we’re going to do and say is hopefully done in a respectful and compassionate manner that will help you to know that we want your mouth to be healthy just like you do,” he said.

That’s the balance he aims for: real information, real recommendations, and real respect for the person sitting in the chair.

It’s Not Too Late

One of the most common things Dr. Kaiser hears from patients is regret about how they took care of their teeth in the past. His response? The past is the past. “You can’t change the past,” he said, “but you’re here now in the chair, and we’re gonna do everything we can moving forward.”

Sometimes a treatment plan involves significant work. Sometimes it involves a fresh start. But in Dr. Kaiser’s view, there is almost always something that can be done to move things in a better direction, and the first step is just walking through the door.

“You shouldn’t be afraid to come in if there’s things wrong,” he said. “You can trust that we’re gonna be on your side.”
