WE'RE HERE FOR YOU

Common Dental Emergencies We Treat

Dental emergencies come in many forms, and our teams are trained to handle a wide range of urgent situations. Some of the most common reasons patients seek emergency dentistry include:

Severe Toothaches

Persistent or worsening tooth pain can signal decay, infection, or an abscess that requires immediate attention.

Knocked-Out Teeth

A permanent tooth that has been knocked out can sometimes be saved if you get to a dentist quickly, ideally within 30 minutes.

Cracked or Broken Teeth

Fractured teeth can cause significant pain and leave the tooth vulnerable to infection if not treated promptly.

Dental Abscesses

A bacterial infection that causes swelling, fever, and intense pain, an abscess requires urgent care to prevent the infection from spreading.

Lost Fillings or Crowns

When a restoration falls out, the affected tooth is exposed and susceptible to further damage or sensitivity.

Soft Tissue Injuries

Cuts, lacerations, or injuries to the gums, tongue, lips, or cheeks may require professional evaluation and treatment.

BE PREPARED

what to do before you arrive

Knowing how to manage a dental emergency before you reach our office can make a meaningful difference in your outcome. Here are a few quick steps for some of the most common situations:

For a Cracked or Broken Tooth

Rinse with warm water, apply a cold compress to reduce swelling, and save any tooth fragments to bring with you

For a Knocked-Out Tooth

Handle the tooth by the crown (not the root), rinse gently with water, and try to place it back in the socket or keep it in milk or saliva until you arrive.

For a Toothache

Rinse your mouth with warm water and gently floss to remove any debris. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed, but do not apply aspirin directly to the gum or tooth, as this can cause tissue irritation

For an Abscess

Rinse with warm salt water to ease discomfort, but do not attempt to drain the infection yourself. Seek emergency dentistry care as soon as possible.

When in doubt, call your nearest Comfort Dental location. Our teams are happy to walk you through what to do while you make your way to us

HAVE QUESTIONS?

frequently asked questions

We’ve answered the most common questions our patients ask about emergency dental care.

What counts as a dental emergency?

A dental emergency is any situation involving severe pain, bleeding, swelling, or damage that requires prompt professional attention. Common examples include knocked-out or broken teeth, abscesses, lost crowns or fillings that cause discomfort, and injuries to soft tissue inside the mouth. When in doubt, call your nearest Comfort Dental location and describe your symptoms; our teams can help you determine how urgently you need to be seen.

Can I walk in without an appointment?

Yes. Comfort Dental welcomes walk-ins for emergency dentistry at most locations, and we do our best to see patients the same day. Many locations also offer extended weekday hours and Saturday appointments to make urgent care as accessible as possible.

What if I do not have dental insurance?

We regularly serve patients as a no insurance dentist and are committed to being a budget dentist option for those who need it. Our teams will walk you through the cost of treatment before any work begins and help you explore payment options that fit your situation. Lack of insurance should never be a reason to delay care for a dental emergency.

Should I go to the ER instead of a dentist?

For most dental emergencies, a dentist is the right choice. Emergency rooms can address pain management and swelling, but they are generally not equipped to treat dental issues directly. However, if you are experiencing facial trauma, broken bones, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or bleeding that will not stop, go to the nearest emergency room right away and follow up with a dentist afterward.

How can I manage pain before I get to the office?

While you are on your way to see us, you can rinse with warm salt water, apply a cold compress to the outside of your face to reduce swelling, and take an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed on the label. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum or tooth, as this can irritate the tissue. These steps can help take the edge off, but they are not a substitute for professional emergency dentistry care.
